How to use BrokerLink

BrokerLink Protection provides a fast and easy way to maintain updated SmartStop powered exit protection on stocks held with participating brokers.

Currently, the SmartStops BrokerLink capability is available only for TD AMERITRADE account holders. If you would like to use SmartStops BrokerLink with another broker, let us know and tell ask you broker about integrating with SmartStops.

BrokerLink Protection – Quick Start Overview

If you have already created a BrokerLink enabled portfolio and want to put BrokerLink automated protection on your stocks, follow these simple steps. From you’re My Portfolios page, select your BrokerLink enabled portfolio and click on the BrokerLink Order Requests link.

Click Synchronize your portfolio to ensure you are viewing up to date information. SmartStops will call out to your brokerage account requesting the latest information regarding your positions and update this page accordingly.

Set your protective order preferences for each of your holdings. Select the number of shares you want included in the protective stop order, the trigger type you would like to use and if you want protection turned on or off at this time. You can simply save these settings for future action or save and submit order requests to your broker.

Click “Save & Submit” to submit your protective order requests to your broker. Upon acceptance, these orders will cancel and replace any orders generated from previous SmartStops.net BrokerLink order requests.

Each day your SmartStop order requests will be updated with the latest SmartStop trigger prices. To update your protective orders with your broker, you must log into your SmartStops account and click “Save & Submit”.

Note: You can not add or remove stocks from a BrokerLinked Portfolio. This portfolio is updated by synchronizing with the associated brokerage account. To selectively add stocks to a watch list, create a new portfolio that is not BrokerLink enabled.

BrokerLink protection is turned off for this position. Protective order requests are not being sent to the broker.

BrokerLink is turned on for this position, but no BrokerLink initiated protective orders are currently in place with your broker. Click the Save & Submit button to send protective order requests to your broker.

Protected

BrokerLink is turned on for this position and there is a BrokerLink initiated protective order currently in place with your broker. Note: The protective order in place may or may not have the latest SmartStop trigger. You must submit updated order requests for each market day to maintain the latest SmartStop triggers.

The information presented is current as of the last synchronized date and time. Your first step in any procedure or analysis should always be to synchronize your portfolio to ensure you are viewing the latest information.

Adding BrokerLink To An Existing SmartStops Account

Log into your SmartStops Account. Go to “My Account” then click “Edit” by My Services.

On the service selection page, click the BrokerLink check box and enter the following offer code: “TDAECFREE”. Click “Calculate Total” to view your adjusted charges. Be sure you have selected a large enough portfolio limit to accommodate all the stocks in your TD AMERITRADE account.

Click “Save”. If your charge amount is greater than zero, you will be prompted to enter your credit card information.

Creating A BrokerLink Enabled Portfolio

Once you have added the BrokerLink service to your account, the first step is to create a BrokerLink enabled portfolio. Click on “Create a new portfolio”. Enter a name for your portfolio and select TD AMERITRADE as your broker. Then click the check box to BrokerLink enable this portfolio and click “Save & Continue”. You will be prompted to enter the account information for the brokerage portfolio you would like to synchronize with. Compete this information and click Synchronize. You will now be viewing your synchronized portfolio. Your BrokerLink enabled portfolio will display all the stocks and ETF’s held in the associated brokerage account. The portfolio will not show any positions in mutual funds or options.

Note: You can not add or remove stocks from a BrokerLinked Portfolio. This portfolio is updated by synchronizing with the associated brokerage account. To add stocks to a watch list, create a new portfolio that is not BrokerLink enabled.

Setting Up BrokerLink Order Requests

With BrokerLink, you can have protective stop order requests for your stocks automatically updated each day with the latest SmartStops and prepared for you to review and submit to your broker at a click of the mouse.

From your My Portfolios page, select the BrokerLinked portfolio you would like to manage.

Go to the BrokerLink Protection page for that portfolio and Synchronize your account. If your broker account login information is not cookied on your computer, you will be prompted to log in to your brokerage account. SmartStops.net does not store your brokerage login information. Your SmartStop BrokerLinked porfolio is now synchronized with your brokerage account.

In the BrokerLink order request table, select the order specifications you would like deployed for each of your positions. Be sure to turn protection on for each of the positions for which you would like order requests submitted. Note: Order requests containing Short Term or Long Term SmartStop triggers will be automatically updated at the end of each market day with the latest published SmartStops. Custom trigger values will remain constant until changed by you.

Click the “Save & Submit” button. These order requests have now been sent to your broker and you will presented with confirmation that they have been accepted or declined.

Maintaining & Updating BrokerLink Order Requests

At the end of each market day, SmartStop portfolio protection users will receive an End Of Day Report including:

  • A table listing all the stocks they have in their SmartStop portfolios with the latest published SmartStops for use the next market day.

  • A table listing the BrokerLink protective order requests that have been updated with the latest SmartStops and are awaiting approval and submittal.

    To submit your updated protective order requests to your broker log into your SmartStops account and got to the BrokerLink Order Requests page and click the “Save & Submit” button at the bottom of the BrokerLink Order Requests table. Its that easy!

    The icons to the right of the table will reflect for each of your positions that status of protection.

    What if you have submitted order requests but would like to change your protective orders? Each time you click “Save & Submit” order requests are sent to your broker requesting a cancellation of the previous orders submitted a replacement per your new order request instructions. Simply update your order request preferences and click “Save & Submit” to have the updated order request sent to your broker.

    Brokerage Specific Order Information

    TD AMERITRADE:

    All orders resulting from accepted order requests are placed by TD AMERITRADE as Stop Market Orders. If the price of the stock hits the “trigger” the position will be sold at the next available price. This “fill” price may be above or below the “trigger” price. Accepted orders are good till canceled or until they expire 7 days from the date placed.
